H.O.R.S.E Poker Basics
H.O.R.S.E poker is the most popular mixed poker game. HORSE is a combination of five separate poker games, typically played in rotations of 10 hands per game. The first game in H.O.R.S.E poker is Texas Holdem. This will be played for 10 hands and then the next game is Omaha Hi-Lo. It is important to mention that in HORSE all the games are played in the fixed limit format. After Omaha Hi-Lo comes Razz poker, Razz is seven card stud lowball. This is typically the game most players new to HORSE have trouble with. Unlike 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo there are no qualifying requirements for the low hand. Here is an example, if my lowest 5 card combination is 2-5-10-J-Q and your lowest hand is 2-3-4-5-K than I would win the pot because my highest card is a queen and yours is a king.
After Razz comes seven card stud high. It is important to pay attention to which game you are playing. I have made the mistake of thinking I was playing Razz when in actuality I was playing seven card stud. The last game in HORSE is 7 card stud hi-lo which is much like Razz only it is a split pot game. The player with the highest hand will receive 1/2 of the pot and the lowest qualifying low hand will win the other half. To qualify for the low pot your highest card has to be eight or less. It is possible to win both the high and the low pot with the same hand, here is an example:
Me: A-A-3-5-7-6-6-9
You: 2-3-4-5-5-4-8
In the situation above my low hand is A-3-5-6-7 and your low hand is 2-3-4-5-8. Since my highest card is seven and yours is eight I would win the low pot. When calculating the high hand I would have A-A-6-6-9 and you would have 4-4-5-5-8 thus I would also win the high hand.
HORSE poker is more popular among seven card stud players because three out of the five games play in the seven card stud format. The reason HORSE is such a hard game to master is because learning how to play each of the five games well is a difficult task. The average HORSE player is typically good or very good at 2-3 of the games and bad or average at the other 2-3. Spotting your opponents weak games is very important if you want to preform well at the H.O.R.S.E poker tables. Before you play HORSE poker for real money you should make sure you understand the rules and general strategies for each game. This is true whenever you are playing in a mixed poker games. There are many variations of HORSE such as HOSE, HOE and OE poker.
